 VANLENTINE’S DAY

There is a custom in Italy for young people to get engaged on Valentine's Day. Some shops sell baskets and cups which are filled with sweets and tied with ribbons. The young lovers offer these to each other as a sign of their love. In Korea, on February 14th, young women give sweets to their boyfriends, and on March 14th their boyfriends buy them chocolate. However, the young people who do not have a girlfriend or boyfriend can celebrate their own day on April 14th. On this special day, called "Black Day", these young people sit with their friends, who are in the same situation, and eat jajang noodles, which are black. This ensures that everyone has a day to celebrate. Most people in the United States take Valentine's Day as an opportunity to express their feelings towards their loved one or to offer the hand of friendship to others. However, it is popular on these days to send an "anti-Valentine" card. These cards either have an insulting message (to the person you hate) or say goodbye (to your current partner). If you receive a card with the message "C-Ya!" (See you), it means your boyfriend or girlfriend wants to end your relationship.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS
In many countries, like Britain and Japan, wearing school uniforms is still a tradition, but in others, like the United States, France, and Germany, uniforms are not so common.
Some people say that uniforms are important. Uniforms help students learn to obey rules and learn to study better. They make all the students equal in appearance. They also help students feel like part of the school.
Others people disagree. They say that uniforms are uncomfortable and unattractive. Most importantly, they say that when students wear uniforms, they can’t express themselves with their clothes.

FOOD CAN BE DANGEROUS FOR YOUR HEALTH
When you go to a restaurant you often think that the food you are ordering is good for you. But many restaurants serve healthy food, like fish or salad, with a sauce or dressing that uses a lot of oil, fat, or sugar. The British Food Standards Agency wants all restaurants to say in their menus exactly what is in each dish, how may calorieis, how much fat, and what additives. They think that restaurants don't give their customers enough information, and that this new plan could help people to have a healthier diet.
But chefs are not happy with the Agency' plan. One top chef said, "People are not stupid. They know that many sauces have butter and cream in them. But if we put on a menu that dish has 1000 calories, nobody is going to order it!"
However, many doctors agree with the plan. Bruce Ward, Professor of Medecine, said, "People know that cigarettes are bad for them, because it tells you on the packet. But when they go to a restauran they often have no idea if the food is healthy or not. Food products that have a lot of calories, fat, and sugar need a health warning, exactly like cigarettes."

SMOKING
Smoking causes lung cancer, which is the number one cancer among men. Ninety percent of the people who get lung cancer die. Smokers have six times as much cancer of the mouth, tongue, and throat as nonsmokers. Smokers have twice as much heart disease. Smoking gives people breathing problems. It also harms the stomach. Smoking causes one million early deaths in the world every year.
Smokers breathe smoke out into the air. They breathe “it” out on their children and on their wives or husbands. Children who parents smoke have more breathing and lung problems than other children. Women who are married to smokers are more likely to lung cancer than those married to nonsmokers.

Isn’t it amazing how much time we spend talking about food? “Have you ever eaten…?” “What did you have for lunch?” and so on. And yet when you travel from one country to another, you find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal, and that what other people eat is strange or silly. In most parts of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating, like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink large amounts of beer and the French drink wine every day.
The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don’t like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish.
Sit seems that although eating is a topic that we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say about it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habits.
